Joseph Israel Laban Has Officially Entered the World of Fiction, Winning Big at Cinemalaya

Being a News Doc alum doesn’t mean you’re limited to documentary filmmaking. Thanks to our wonderful staff, the skills learned here are applicable beyond journalism. Say, for instance, fiction. Joseph took these skill and flourished, making his film “Baconaua,” which  won three major awards at the Cinemalaya Awards Night last night: Special Jury Prize, Best Director and Best Cinematography.

“After a particularly strong squall, a sleepy fishing village on a tiny island in Southern Tagalog wakes up to an astonishing sight – their sea has turned red. Floating on their waters are thousands of apples. No one knows where they came from. Some suspect this is a bad omen from the baconaua – a creature of myth. Few believe it to be a miracle from heaven, while others fear a more sinister source.”

We wish Joseph the best of luck with his new film!
